Philippe Gazeau : Médiathèque Romain Rolland

Recently delivered by the architecture firm Philippe Gazeau, the Romain Rolland library stretches its long silhouette in the neighborhood renovation of the City Cachin in Romainville.

On Albert Street Giry, the equipment is revealed, consisting of a mineral base topped by a metal hall and a green roof to undulating.

The agency says Philippe Gazeau:

"The Romainville media library is set up in the heart of a city undergoing renovation. The opening up sought by town planners proposes to fragment the existing housing bars and to clear a central plain to accommodate a large garden and two facilities including the media library which must serve as an attractive element on the scale of the district. The new building floats between two flying carpets. The volume of the media library is, in the same movement, raised above the level of the street and the public garden, and slid under the undulations of its green roof. It is the roof of the project that gives the first impetus. The hills of the roof transmit the undulating movement to the floor of the central plain through the space of the large reading room to upstairs, thanks to the negative swelling of the waves of the roof on its ceiling. The interior space of the reading room oriented and overlooking the street and the garden is not only crossing, it is crossedand suspended by the landscape which turns upside down.

The new Mediatheque Romainville is as a building with simple architectural forms, but of great strength and expressive richness. It is an "oriented" building between the new street and the large refurbished garden. It is a "hierarchical" building from 3 superimposed horizontal sequence: a base on the ground floor, a large metal hall upstairs in cantilever side street and garden side, finally a vegetated cover to the topography undulating. These three main elements structure and bring together the architectural and functional picture of the whole. The project meets the grip of the plot in the proposed general development plan, freeing the largest possible space for the future garden. The volume aligns the new path, but the withdrawal of the ground floor as cantilever floor of 1er allows to develop a vast protected and sheltered clearance between the public road and the entrance to the library . The metal structure of the first floor allowing a significant overhang without poles gives the picture its characteristic building. On the street, the monumental canopy naturally indicates the building entrance that opens onto the large sheltered courtyard.

Strong architectural sequences accompany the user or visitor from outside into the heart of the library: the awning parvissous the-exhibition hall, the vertical space of articulation of the monumental staircase, hence the we discover the great reading room. "
