Studio Maks et Junya Ishigami : Vijversburg Park

A funny structure is taking place in the Vijversburg park in Tytsjerksteradiel in the Netherlands. A tripartite UFO, the visitor center is the result of a four-handed work including the Dutch studio Maks and the Japanese agency Junya Ishigami. Composed of three long corridors, this new space follows the topography of the site without denaturing it.

Open to the public since 1892, Vijversburg Park is the green lung of the Tytsjerksteradiel and a place of activity and meeting essential to the life of the town, including hosting various art exhibitions, concerts or performances. In order to receive the growing number of visitors linked to a flourishing cultural program, Studio Maks and Junya Ishigami imagine a place to host the various meetings and exhibitions, in all weathers.

"Although the pavilion is an architectural project, it has been designed and imagined in the context of the landscape. " Marieke Kums, Studio Maks

Spread over 270 square meters, the fully glazed tomoe-like structure - an ancient Japanese symbol - is partially buried one meter underground, providing walkers with a new perspective on the emblematic green space of municpality. From a triangular heart depart three curved branches, encompassing trees, water and neoclassical remains present on the site since the nineteenth century - also renovated by Studio Maks -, thus creating a pathway covering much of Vijversburg Park.

A pavilion enhancing the green environment of the park, while bringing a breath of minimalist Japanese within the city.
