Renzo Piano Building Workshop : Tribunal de Grande Instance

If since the Middle Ages, the Parisian judicial world took place in the heart of Paris, on the Ile de la Cité, the lack of space of these prestigious and medieval districts began to be felt. To overcome this problem, a new building, near the Batignolles, in the north of the capital, now includes the auditoriums and offices of the institution.

Until then distributed in different annexes scattered around the capital, the various functions of the Tribunal de Grande Instance in Paris communicated with each other with difficulty. It was not counting on the Renzo Piano Building Workshop agency that establishes a project bringing together offices and courtrooms in a single building, leaving the historic headquarters of Île de la Cité to host the Assize Court, the Court of Appeal and the Court of Cassation.

Who says operating change also says shape change. While justice was once represented by Gothic works, it is a contemporary construction in the shape of a boot culminating at 160 meters high, spread over an area of 100 000 square meters on the ground that hides today the seals of the department. Composed of six fully glazed blocks placed on top of each other in layers of eight levels, like a huge staircase, the project begins with the Salle des Pas Perdus - accessible from the forecourt on the ground floor - place reception and flow control of visitors and employees. Characterized by its Grand Atrium, this space distributes public functions and services as well as 90 hearing rooms. The whole is bathed in natural lighting enhanced by the presence of white walls and parquet flooring, all offering a sober, soft and warm. Overlooking the construction, a wooded terrace of 7 000 square meters constitutes the vegetal lung of this urban ensemble.

A functional and contemporary program that proves that institutions as old as they are, can evolve without doing them harm.
