François Chatillon Architecte et Michel Rémon & Associés : Maison des sciences de l'homme

In charge of renovating the Maison des sciences de l'homme made between 1965 and 1969 by Marcel Lods, Paul Depondt and Henri Beauclair, the agencies François Chatillon Architect and Michel Rémon & Associés had to bring back to standard an iconic construction without altering it. Back on a restoration not quite like the others ...

In architecture as in any other artistic field, the renovation of a work requires special care, with the difference that it is often accompanied by a form of sublimation, due to constraints and a new project manager contemporaries. Refurbished by François Chatillon Architecte and Michel Rémon & Associés, the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme is no exception.

Built between 1965 and 1969 by Marcel Lods, Paul Depondt and Henri Beauclair, this unusual building is an icon of modern style, thanks to its apparent metal structure, its curtain wall facade protected by movable exterior shutters and its modular interior spaces. A status which will not prevent it unfortunately from having to be désamanté and brought back to the standards, leading in 2011 the launching of a campaign of works of renovation.

In an effort to respect this legacy, the designers have conducted their own research on the building, even consulting their predecessors. Precautions that are far from useless, since they have, for "Restoration of transparencies on the ground floor", now "Cleaned to find the original layout with the same materials"explain the architects. In addition, each of the 1 260 facade modules consisting of glazed frames and their characteristic shutters, was dismantled, disassembled and then reinstalled. A real return to the sources, however accompanied by some modifications, like glazing the steps of the main staircase to promote the contribution of light.
