Pannetier Architecture : Centre culturel Daviel et Théâtre 13

Just a few steps from the metro station Glacière, in the 13e district of Paris, the Daviel Cultural Center and the 13 Theater have a brand new look. A change made by the agency Pannetier Architecture that has taken advantage of an existing structuralist style rather difficult to apprehend.

Enclosed in the 13e district of Paris, this cultural center designed in 1981 by architects Dubrulle and Lana deserved serious work, involving upgrades to safety standards, accessibility and energy performance. Given the importance of the building in the lives of local residents and neighborhood, the demolition is a solution quickly dismissed, as told by the Pannetier Architecture team, in charge of its renovation: "The success of the theater and the interest of the residents in the proposed activities showed that the two institutions did not suffer from their situation".

As a result, the architects imagined a gentle renovation. From a pragmatic point of view, the two functions housed within the building - formerly mixed - now have independent entrances and technical networks. To enhance the identity of the original project, the exterior is reworked, without denying the structuralist heritage transmitted by Dubrulle and Lana. "We unified the concrete skeleton filled with bricks through the application of a white paint on the entire facade"explain the architects. In addition, two extensions "Dressed in mirror-polished metal taking up the layout of the existing brick", are added to the last floor, to increase the useful surface without upsetting the harmony of the volumes. The interior is also redesigned and the wood cladding now dominates in the rehearsal or circulation spaces. The auditorium, finally, is not left out: entirely covered with black - walls, ceilings and armchairs included - it sports ceiling mysterious light frames, like so many paintings sheltering invisible characters.
