Canal Architecture : Médiathèque des Capucins

For the first time since their construction in the nineteenth century, the workshops of the Capuchins of Brest, located in the former military district of the same name, are returned to the inhabitants by hosting a new media library. Back on an impressive transformation signed Canal Architecture.

In turn convent, hospital, barracks, and industrial workshops ... the buildings of the Capucins plateau, located on the site of the Arsenal of Brest, have several times changed destination and face since their construction in 1840. Transferred to the Brest community in 2009, they now house the François Mitterrand Mediatheque - The Capuchins, spread over almost 10 000 square meters. A vast rehabilitation operation carried out with a master hand by the Canal Architecture agency.

At exceptional site, exceptional project. As a result, the architects chose to take advantage of the existing monumental stone and steel halls to offer the Brestois a grandiose media library, like no other. The walls have been preserved but no longer fulfill any structural function; a role now assumed by a brand new metal skeleton. In addition, five gables were literally moved and returned to the southeast, resuming the original design of the building. A radical but necessary choice to restore the project an identifiable facade from the other side of La Penfeld, the river connecting the naval base to the Atlantic Ocean. As for interior design, it does not escape the rule of excess! Thus, between the shelves to store the collections, are installed huge wooden structures, similar to large dressers sheltering in fact bleachers. Added to this are armchairs, mattresses and even toboggans! Ideal for visitors to read and work, this "furniture" also highlights the beautiful height of the whole ceiling, up to 19 meters high ridge! Finally, a large area of the program is left completely free at the disposal of the inhabitants, to the delight of the skateboarders. A real success, since the media library would have hosted 400 000 visitors in just 8 months!
