Berranger & Vincent : Le Chronographe

Erected on a small hill in the town of Rezé (44), this project signed by the architects of the Berranger & Vincent agency combines materials as disparate as glass, larch or metal. A building with a timeless aesthetic, which houses an archeology museum ...

Composed of a volume clad in larch, perched on a glass and metal base, this castle-like project designed by French architects from the Berranger & Vincent agency seems to be out of time, somewhere between past and present and future. And for good reason, The Chronograph (literally meaning "Who inscribes time") is a museum of archeology, located in the small town of Rezé, near Nantes, built on ancient remains.

Hosting two exhibition halls - one dedicated to the permanent collection, the other to temporary events -, offices, an accessible roof terrace and a gazebo peaking at over 15 meters in height, the achievement is "Thought and drawn like a scaffolding in wood and metal", say the architects. A strong bias with a double advantage. Thus, while the predominantly natural materials facilitate the integration of the building on this historic site - neighbor, in particular, the Chapel Saint-Lupien -, its high form allows it to be visible from afar. "This signage works as a marker and becomes the starting point or arrival point for walkers", specify the project managers.

The interior, moreover, is entirely designed to offer visitors a memorable experience. Thus, if raw materials such as polished concrete on the ground can enhance the collections by their design, the windows of the ground floor are pierced to make visible the ruins of the old building on which is built the museum, taking advantage of the slope of the ground. Difficult, ultimately, to determine what was here before or after the intervention of the architects. And that's the beauty of the Chronograph ...
