A closed educational center for young people; here is a typology that we imagine abandoned by architecture. It was without counting on the workshop COMBAS Architects who signs in Marseilles (13e) a realization at the same time aesthetic and empathic for its users.
There are projects that are distinguished by their intelligence and their consideration for users, despite sometimes difficult programs. The closed Educational Center, created by the architects of the COMBAS workshop belongs to this category, despite the many constraints inherent to its typology. "The enclosure must protect both external intrusions and escapes; the construction must be robust, almost indestructible and level, to avoid situations of domination for example », detail about it the designers. So many imperatives that can easily lead to the realization of ugly, impersonal and unlivable equipment.
None of these qualifiers seems to be suitable for this realization consisting of a central building and two side wings, and oriented towards the south to turn their backs to nearby homes and thus isolate the young inmates. A bias also allowing the development of a large courtyard, essential in such an establishment. To meet the durability requirements, architects favor a thick structure of 51 centimeters thick, composed "A concrete veneer of planks, isolated from the outside and protected by a stone wall of Estaillades", offering a certainly crude, but undeniably aesthetic.
Finally, concerning circulations, the COMBAS workshop is inspired by the arches usually present in the cloisters. Thus, the corridor of access to individual rooms is pierced with a multitude of loopholes overlooking the courtyard - planted by the young themselves - and in the distance, on the Good Mother.
