Louis Paillard : Site de l'ancienne gare de Montrouge

Install three separate buildings to accommodate 126 housing and rehabilitate at the same time the former Montrouge station in Paris (14e). This is the colorful proposal made by architect Louis Paillard. A crazy project, but whose success is based precisely on this grain of madness.

This is the story of an almost surreal project, as its context and program are complex. Everything, moreover, could have started like this: "Your mission, if you accept it, will be to rehabilitate the former station of Montrouge, to create 126 housing, all without cluttering the rails, in case trains would come back one day there ..." Fortunately, this request was not addressed to any American actor, but to the singular Louis Paillard.

Not discouraged for a penny, this one imagined three buildings, which he himself describes as "Bridge-buildings, suspended above the tracks". And as the neighborhood does not present a real stylistic coherence, the three volumes each offer a different architecture that, by a wonderful process, finally generate a form of harmony. Thus, the building erected rue Coulmiers rises in a tower of eight levels, singularized by projecting windows that seem to have grown there at random - a solution also used for the second volume, which differs from its neighbor only by its small size and its bronze color. In another register, the third building - which houses near 100 housing -, exhibits street side a brick cladding associated with a second metal, while the three courtyards it houses are coated with green coating, yellow or blue . A choice all but obvious, yet effective, as if only cacophony could make coherence to disorder. But this is perhaps Louis Paillard himself who summarizes it best: "Atypical urban situation, atypical and varied housing! "
