Laboratory of Architecture #3 : Mediathek

At the heart of the lush vegetation of Georgia's Vake Park is the Tbilisi Municipal Media Library. Designed by the local Laboratory of Architecture Studio #3, the 1 200 square meter building seems to levitate thanks to a floor dressed in translucent polycarbonate on the one hand and a cantilevered structure of technical fabric on the other hand .

Covering an area of 200 hectares, the Vake wood, located southeast of the Georgian capital, has been home to several cultural and sports facilities since the 2000 years, such as the Mikheil-Meskhi National Stadium, an amusement park and even more. a museum of open air. The media library, located north-east of this nature reserve, takes place on a large clay tray.

Erected on a square plan of 12 meters from the side, the construction, preceded by a stone square, consists of two distinct parts. The first consists of a parallelepiped of 22 meters by 12, on the ground floor entirely glazed welcoming a circular space dedicated to children and an oval multimedia room. Upstairs, camouflaged behind polycarbonate sheets, desks and a reading room take place around a round patio and an auditorium of 45 places.

The second is an external area of the same size, surrounded at the top by a U-shaped enclosure covered with Ferrari canvas, visual extension of the upper facade of the adjacent pavilion. Thanks to an imposing metal cantilever beam, the structure seems to float in the air.

This outer courtyard conceals a wooden and concrete helicoidal ramp, providing access to the building floor, and a circular glazed pavilion with vertical strips of wood hosting a cafeteria linked to the main building by an airlock dressed in the same material. In addition to its circulatory function, this sloped and curved airway is transformed into a place of entertainment for children. The realization, of great formal simplicity, offers an ideal place for reading and fun in the heart of the forest.

The realized work is extremely simple and the result absolutely extraordinary.
Thank you for your courage in producing a work that is as technically complex and as simple as it is formally. I hope to visit one day.

  • Very nice !
