Snøhetta : Muttrah Fish Market

On the outskirts of the port of Muttrah (Oman), one of the most important in the country, a surprising structure has been built hosting the second fish market in the city. Designed by the Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta, the 4 000 square meters building is a new emblem for the Omani city.

Located south of Muttrah Harbor, right next to the former 1960 Fish Market, the new construction follows the curve of the bay facing it.

Two main buildings - one of two levels south, the other three north - connected by a footbridge and covered by a large canopy, and take place around a large esplanade where merchants have become accustomed to come together, offering 4 000 square meters of floor area that fishermen are free to landscap. The upper floors, where there are two fully glazed pavilions and spacious terraces, provide visitors with a more open space than the lower levels where shadows and reflections of the metal frame dance.

"The roof follows the idea of a game between the movement of the sun's rays and the shadows created by the aluminum beams, resulting in a slight veiling, natural ventilation and an almost ephemeral appearance. " Snøhetta

The Norwegian builders have chosen to incorporate dark steel gates resembling moucharabiehs, inspired by local architecture, and small hexagonal openings, providing a filtered and soft light inside, on the ground floor. while allowing to naturally ventilate the place of sale where the smells can be very strong. The majestic white aluminum frame, supported by five rows of tree posts, whose shape evokes the wings of a bird, refers to the curves of Arabic letters.
