Aleph Zero et Rosenbaum : Children Village

In the heart of Brazil, in the small village of Canuanã, the local architecture firm Aleph Zero and the Brazilian design office Rosenbaum deliver two sets of accommodation for 540 residents of a rural school. Designed with local resources such as wood and earth, the book offers generous play and life spaces for residents.

In 1973 in the Formoso do Araguaia region, one of the most remote areas in Brazil, the Bradesco Foundation created the Canuanã school, a village composed of some fifty buildings designed to offer more than 800 students a quality education . To meet a growing demand, the agglomeration has thus acquired two gigantic additional housing units to accommodate 540 children who have completed the workforce. These buildings are positioned on both sides of the town center: one to the north for girls, the other to the south for boys.

Through a series of workshops, architects, schoolchildren and teachers have come up with a project conceived as a small town teeming with activity. Each space, with a surface area of 10 700 square meters, consists of ten volumes ground level 50 square meters housing dormitories of six beds, organized around three gardens. Thanks to a network of footbridges and a huge blanket of corrugated iron supported by a wooden structure over the buildings, the flat roofs of each unit are occupied by various games, such as trampolines, or meeting spaces. that residents can freely appropriate.

During the group workshops, another request was made for the use of local materials and vernacular manufacturing techniques. It is therefore natural that the builders turned to a laminated eucalyptus wood structure, a renewable resource, abundant in the country, easy to transform and prefabricated. The mud brick, an ancient regional know-how, was used for the walls. Indeed, it has undeniable thermal qualities - retaining heat at night and freshness during the day - and, by assembling its blocks, allows creating moucharabiehs developing a natural ventilation in bathrooms while recalling the reasons Picturesque traditional houses of this area of the country.

A simple but elegant work, respecting its environment.
