Dialog Design : Funiculaire d’Edmonton

Officially named "100 Street Funicular and Frederick G. Todd Lookout," this Edmonton City infrastructure is the first of its kind in the country. An innovative set designed by the local architects of Dialog Design, which does not distort its green environment.

Designed to connect the Saskatchewan River Valley to downtown Edmonton - located high up - this glass funicular can accommodate up to 20 people and leads to a belvedere overlooking the city. For the bravest and sporty, a series of 170 steps along the installation and is decorated with concrete seats arranged for those who wanted to pause during their ascent. Arrived at the top of the complex, users can extend their journey on a sculptural bridge leading to a park of 850 square meters including benches designed by the Vancouver artist, Jill Anholt.

"By enabling more people to take advantage of the Riparian Valley's trails, this initiative will promote a healthy lifestyle and improve the quality of life for the people of Edmonton. " Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities

The whole is clad with Kebony wood which, with time, will skate, silver color, echoing the hues of the trees of the region, in order to better integrate the landscape of the region. However, the choice of a coating such as this is not solely motivated by aesthetic reasons. Located in a region of the Globe with extreme winter conditions, the construction had to be erected in a material able to withstand negative temperatures without additional treatment.

An installation offering a whole new look at the now unified city of Edmonton.
