JR Architects : Space of Engraving Lights

In the alleys of Tainan (Taiwan) hides a case of light imagined by the agency JR Architects. The Space of Engraving Lights project, the result of the transformation of a dilapidated inn into a loft-like commercial space, has only one motto: clarity.

Between dust, darkness and unusable materials, the place seemed destined for destruction. Nevertheless, it is on this abandoned place that the choice of the architects of the agency JR, then in search of premises, and seduced by the quality of the light provided by the few rays of the sun adventurous filtering through the fragmented openings of the building.


In order not to distort the neighborhood, the designers retain part of the original red brick facade and add new, new ones, reinforcing the industrial aspect of the whole. A material used here as breadcrumb as it is found inside, this time all dressed white. The facade is pierced by large geometric windows and small openings, similar to contemporary moucharabiehs.
The 130 square meters of floor area consists of a single room with mezzanine and an adjacent patio, resting on the beams of yesteryear, left exposed and reinforced by a steel studs-beams framework. The large, uncluttered spaces, combined with large bay windows, allow the sun to flood the offices of light throughout the day. A link with the outside accentuated by the presence of the patio which acts as an outgrowth outside the program.

And there was light !
