Lund + Slaatto Architects : Ulstein Arena

The Norwegian municipality of Ulsteinvik offers a second youth thanks to the realization of a large-scale project with multiple uses conceived by the Scandinavian agency Lund + Slaatto Architects. Sports halls, swimming pools, and even a library, take place in a group of two glazed buildings, open to the snowy landscapes of the region.

It is well known, the sport is unifying and can revitalize a city by offering its inhabitants the opportunity to meet around a common passion. An idea well understood by the designers of the Ulstein Arena, a building of 1 000 square meters divided into two main volumes of two levels connected by a lower ball joint, whose roof serves as a public circulation space connecting the upper part and lower part of Ulsteinvik.

In reference to the surrounding sinuous mountains, both sets are inclined. These longitudinal concrete buildings are clad in zinc and illuminated by large vertical windows, bathing the wooden interiors with natural white light, suited to northern environments.

The block to the west is semi-buried and conceals a multifunctional gym on the ground floor. The upper floor, much higher ceiling, hosts for its part several climbing walls which, thanks to the numerous bay windows, give almost the impression to make a real ascent in full nature.
The second wing, connected to the first by a set of corridors and a cafeteria, offers a mixture of use and is not only dedicated to sports. If the latter is still in the center of the design with the presence of a swimming pool on the floor, the ground floor houses an impressive library, allowing to cultivate a little after having solicited his muscles.
