Archi-Union Architects : InBamboo

Surrounded by bamboo forests, the village of Daomingzhen (China) has benefited since last year from a multifunctional community cultural center, designed by the Shanghai agency Archi-Union Architects, whose eight-shaped roof recalls the symbol of 'infinite.

During his visit to Daomingzhen, the founder of Archi-Union Architects, Philip F. Yuan, is struck by a poem recited to him, singing the ideal relationship between a house and a bamboo forest. This one perfectly illustrates the daily life of the inhabitants, whose life is punctuated by the presence of wood. A theme that inspires the project: InBamboo.

The strength of this building 1 800 square meters of floor space lies in its overlapping roof-shaped ribbon Mobius. Covered with gray ceramic tiles, local material, the cover is based on a mixed timber-metal framework prefabricated to 70% and mounted in only 52 days, whose poles are supported on concrete pads. It follows the layout of the two circular rooms that make up the whole, each organized around a glazed central patio. Thanks to sliding windows, these single-story rooms can be opened to the outside, while being protected from the rain by a massive overflowing roof.
At the same time an exhibition, conference, leisure and restoration site, the building welcomes bamboo weavers and offers a space for sharing about the use of this traditional material, like the corrugated exterior cladding. reinterpreting the traditional art of bamboo basketry.

A structure that reminds us that what is innovation today will be the tradition of tomorrow.
