Frida Escobedo : Pavillon Serpentine

This Monday 11 June 2018 at Kensington Gardens in London (Great Britain) was inaugurated the 18e summer pavilion of the Serpentine Gallery. At the controls this year: the Mexican architect Frida Escobedo, who imagined a space reminiscent of the homes of her childhood, called "Celosía" - meaning "jealousy".

Each year the Serpentine Gallery entrusts an architect with the realization of a pavilion to a renowned architect for its summer programming. While this initiative started in 2000 with the famous Anglo-Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid, here is Frida Escobedo, Mexican architect of 38 years, enters the very closed circle of the masters of work chosen to realize an ephemeral building. She becomes the youngest architect to participate in the event.

Having already created pavilions, notably for the Lisbon Architecture Triennale (2013) or the Chicago Architecture Biennale (2017), she is experimenting here with time as a social interaction, a philosophical notion expressed by Bergson at the beginning of the 20th century.e century, where duration is considered an intuitive conception. The Serpentine Pavilion is the place to experiment, an experience both personal and collective.

The set consists of a triangular pool around which two rectangular volumes arranged at an angle meet to form two entrances and a traffic axis. The walls are made of dark gray cement tiles laid in clearing, British-made, creating interstices offering views of the park. A pivoting partition opens and closes the access to the structure. Above, the roof is designed as a curved canopy whose inner face is made of reflective panels that resonate with the central basin and light effects vary throughout the day, such as "Timepiece that traces the passage", as Frida Escodebo defines it.

The opportunity to celebrate the advancement of the woman architect on a well deserved weekend across the Channel.

Serpentine Pavilion open to the public from 15 June to 7 October 2018, Kensington Garden, London (Great Britain)
