AFA Architectes : Austerlitz

Parisian train stations are getting a new look! After the Saint Lazare station or the Gare de l'Est, it is now the turn of the Austerlitz station to see its premises dating back to the nineteenth century rehabilitated and modernized at the instigation of the Parisian agency AFA Architects.

For this major project started in 2012 including the integration of a new building under the historic Great Hall completed in 1867 and the rehabilitation of various historic buildings facing the Seine, SNCF Gares & Connexions have called on the agency AFA Architects. But that said station also together with many constraints, such as the passage of the RER C under construction or the skytrain line 5 but also the historical character of Austerlitz that the owners have to respect and value .

A not insignificant aspect that required a complete renovation of the facades including a change of joinery, a reinforcement of the carpentry and the restorations of the roof and interior trays on the 9 063 square meters of the wing of Orleans and the buildings Embarcadere and the clock.
But the highlight of the project lies in the creation and installation of a "bridge" built according to the system of "box in the box" straddling above the RER C, resulting in the establishment of anti-slip studs. vibration. A spatial interweaving ensuring a quality acoustic and thermal insulation, while minimizing the impact of a project like this one within a listed monument site, the construction frame of the offices being wedged on that of the frame of Origin - is the master plot of 10 meters subdivided into 2 subframes of 5 and 1,66 meters.

Completely glazed, this new building spread over four levels blends in with the Belle Epoque architecture of the Paris station, thus not obstructing the characteristic zenith light of the station while making a wink to all the openings bathing the light station for nearly two centuries.

An example of successful rehabilitation allowing the heritage to evolve while respecting its footprint in the capital.

The project is selected for the ADC Awards 2019 in the category Tertiary / Rehabilitation
