Thomas Architectes : Maison et chai

For the Reims agency Thomas Architectes, last year was an excellent vintage. She presented a project as sweet as it was sparkling: the construction of a house and a cellar, a balanced mixture of wood and zinc, in Gueux (a small town located to the west of the City of the Kings) in the beautiful in the middle of a Champagne vineyard.

As with the vineyard, the choice of land prior to building a house is decisive. It is he who will influence the orientation of the project, its volume and even the materials, in the same way that soils have an impact on the taste and brightness of the grape. Located in Gueux (51), this achievement delivered in 2017 by the Thomas Architectes agency is no exception to the rule.

Thus, it all begins when the owner of this rectangular plot - extended to the south by his own vineyards stretching over the Montagne de Reims and delimited to the north by an existing wall - asks the architect Jean Philippe Thomas and his team to build on this fertile soil a house and a cellar. Naturally, the designers decide "To play with discretion on the street side to better open up to the south towards the vines". In fact, the two L-shaped volumes are arranged like the two wings of a castle, separated by a courtyard extended by a garden. In prefabricated wood structure, which "Allows very good insulation and airtightness performance", they have on the outside a zinc envelope completed by a cladding as woody as their skeleton, facilitating the integration of the project in its environment.

Unsurprisingly, the distribution of the rooms also results from the orientation of the realization: the three bedrooms and the living room are therefore turned towards the south to enjoy “A favorable exposure and a remarkable view thanks to the large bay windows. Protected from overheating in summer by the overhangs of the roof, they extend outwards through a terrace ”, add the designers. Inside, the large volumes emphasized by the purity of the materials and colors - white walls, smooth concrete for the floor and ceilings clad in wooden strips highlighting the two-sided roof - complete this sober and efficient wine table, as pleasant for the eye that sparkling nectar produced here is for the palate ...
