BAST : Extension d'une chartreuse

BAST - the Toulouse architectural firm winner of the AJAP competition - is extending between 2016 and 2018 an old charterhouse following the purchase by its clients of a small plot adjoining the existing one. Result: the house has been reorganized and mainly benefits from an additional room, halfway between a patio and an interior courtyard.

In Toulouse (31), a family of four bought in 2016 a strip plot of 2,50 x 20 meters just next to their home. Not knowing what to do with this surface, she called on the advice of the local BAST agency. After visiting the site, the architects suggest opening the house onto this new courtyard, installing a glass roof, and, finally, completely reorganizing the entire project. A proposal that the couple and their two children accept.

In fact, BAST's project is simple: rearrange part of the living rooms - kitchen and living room - in the courtyard which will be protected by a glass roof. They will thus gain in surface on this floor, allowing them to bring down the room of the couple formerly on the first level, and even to make a vast and pleasant parental suite.

Problem: Opening the house to the new patio involves ripping it open along almost its entire length. However, the young lady is no longer very young, and she might well collapse. A difficulty that BAST overcomes by building three concrete poles each supported by two micropiles 11 meters long. Another embarrassment: the difference in level between the existing and the courtyard, located about 45 centimeters lower! Instead of filling this characteristic, the architects decide to assume it, and even to accentuate it, so much that they open the soil of the Charterhouse on approximately one meter. There, they set up the dining area: the high slab will serve as a bench!

For the glass roof, the project managers play it MacGyver, - with success! - since they imagine a system made up of several retractable glass panels and for which they divert a sliding gate motor. Thanks to this bright idea, the additional room serves as a winter garden but also as a terrace on sunny days. Smart!
