BAMAA : Caserne de sapeur-pompiers de Sainte-Colombe

The small village of Sainte-Colombe (69) is home to the "little Pompeii", a large archeological site hiding Gallo-Roman remains as well as the medieval tower of Valois. A historic melting pot whose contemporary constructions can only feed. The Barracks imagined by BAMAA is no exception and retraces, on its own, the history of the commune auvergnate.

If the presence of an archaeological site in its city can be considered as a real prestige, for the architects, it is often synonymous with constraint, preventing the masters of works to invade the soil. A necessity that the teams of BAMAA have managed to circumvent through a construction in "jar of reversed yogurt" in which the linear support concrete structure is based on a radiated 25 centimeters. A process reinforced by the choice of two rectangular main volumes - one housing the vehicles, the other the elements necessary for the organization and life of firefighters -, thus limiting the weight of the 540 project square meters and therefore the risks of settlements.

If the envelope shines by the sobriety of its forms, its materiality echoes the different historical layers that have built the identity of Sainte-Colombe. Like the archaeological layers, the walls of the barracks also alternate textures and colors. Although the structure is only concrete, it reflects the many possibilities of formulas and sanding and the freedom that the material can offer. Voluntarily "artisanal", the finishes are also a nod to the hand of antique or medieval shaper, which tends to be lost today.

More than a fire station, this is a testimony of the past and heritage of the municipality of the Rhone.

The project is selected for the ADC Awards 2019 in the category Equipment
