Dominique Perrault Architecte : Tribune Paris Longchamp

Farewell the Longchamp racecourse, hello ParisLongchamp! After two years of work, the emblematic race track of the capital has a new look, offering its users a new experience in an aerial structure signed Dominique Perrault Architect.

On a surface of 45 300 square meters of floor, thousands of spectators fond of horse racing can now discover the new racecourse of 16e arrondissement of Paris which hosts the prestigious Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. For this major project, the agency Dominique Perrault Architect decided to destroy all the stands dating from the 1960 years to create a unique building, named the Jockey-Club platform, both more ergonomic and more functional than the previous one. The buildings dedicated to horse care, originally scattered throughout the 57 hectares site, were also demolished and now give way to a series of lighter boxes.

The stands are designed so that, no matter where the viewer is, he can keep an eye on the progress of the riders and their mount. Thus, the set of four levels is organized as a "transparent shelf" allowing the crowd to come and go without their view of the stables is obstructed. Each balcony seems to float on the grass of Longchamp, as in unstable balance, thanks to its cantilever structure and its slight inclination towards the finish line.

For this realization, only one slogan: lightness. The master builds on a refined and elegant construction, aerial and bathed in light. Although located in the heart of the City of Light, ParisLongchamp is surrounded by nature and allows city dwellers to breathe time for a few hours and regain the taste of the garden parties of yesteryear. A link with the exterior all the more important as the building meets the objectives of the Climate Plan set by the city of Paris, including through the integration of renewable energy production systems.

An exemplary building that turns a page of equestrian traditions to write a new one.

The project is selected for the 2019 ADC Awards in the Mixed category
