Projectiles et Laurent Dufoix : Musée de Lodève

The contemporary part of the Lodeve museum, designed by the architectural firms Projectiles and Laurent Dufoix, plays on the alliances of contrasts, combining patrimonial architecture and contemporary construction. Surprising.

The Lodeve Museum is a museum of modern art, archeology, paleontology and natural sciences. It is located in a wealthy mansion dating from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries that belonged to Cardinal André Hercule de Fleury, a cleric and a French statesman. Between 2015 and 2018, the museum is renovated and modernized. Today, it includes a contemporary part.

The modernization of the mansion has freed the forecourt and thus open the museum on the urban landscape. The large, slightly sloping platforms and bleachers have put the street and museum entrance at the same level. The entrance is now marked by a large steel fault. Visitors are encouraged to pass the door of this cultural space. The respectful and relevant approach of the Projectiles Agency harmoniously combines historical architecture and contemporary architecture for our greatest pleasure.

The new museum offers various exhibition routes organized in relation to the "Passages" volume, a thirteen meter high atrium wrapped in a thin layer of ethylene tetrafluoroethylene, a thermoplastic fluoropolymer. In addition, the use of concrete and raw materials symbolizes the three major chrono-thematic axes of the collections: archeology, paleontology and modern art. Contemporary installations, multimedia devices and historic halls coexist to enhance the protean and heterogeneous collections so characteristic of the Lodève museum, as evidenced by the first exhibition presented since the modernization of the museum "Faune, make me afraid! Images of fauna from Antiquity to Picasso ".

The project is selected for the ADC Awards 2019 in the category culture - museum / exhibition space.
