Suzel Brout et RRC architectes Paul Ravaux : Fondation Victor Lyon

Installed since 1950 within the legendary Cité Universitaire Parisienne, the Victor Lyon Foundation is refurbished by the firm Suzel Brout and RRC architects Paul Ravaux agency and is now equipped with a contemporary and functional conference room, contributing to the rebirth of the institution.

Erected in the middle of the last century by Lucien Bechmann, the Victor Lyon Foundation is characterized by a sober volumetry inspired by buildings from across the Channel, between classicism and modernism, far from the iconic works of that time. However, the building is no less a heritage asset of the Cité U and the architects in charge of its rehabilitation had to deal with its history and that of the former businessman, whose name it bears. name, Victor Lyon, who financed the entire construction work of the House of 109 rooms - for a cost amounting to 100 million francs.

Regarding the existing part, the architects undertake a meticulous renovation similar to that of a Louvre painting: cleaning the red brick facades, installing new frames, upgrading the insulation and setting up aluminum joinery to break thermal bridge over windows with concrete mullions. The floors also benefit from a second wind. The beam-to-beam structure of the whole 39 accommodate social housing ranging from T1 to T5 on free trays. Previously equipped with a single series of steps, the ensemble is now embellished with a second staircase serving the apartments, whose interior features include birch panels - which can be found especially on furniture, doors and windows. sliding walls - in a pure spirit inspired by Scandinavian creations.

The new construction it, intervenes in the south of the whole, side park. Semi-buried at less than one meter deep, the conference room designed by the teams of Suzel Brout is inserted between the wings of the building in U, ground garden. The place, largely covered with wood, is dynamized by the presence of beams in one piece forming a fan going on floor to ceiling, evoking japanizing influences.

A respectful rehabilitation of heritage with refined contemporary choices.
