Spartley & Partners : Heather Cottage

Curling around a fire at a winter in Berkshire, England ... A cliché inspiring Spartley & Partners teams in the development of Heather Cottage, a contemporary revisit of the typical English cottage figure, where the warm weathered wood meets the clean forms of Californian villas.

Near a river in the countryside of southern England, the private second home designed by British architects Spartley & Partners is located in a charming but floodable area, forcing its designers to incorporate foundations on piles, placing the building at 1,85 meter from the ground. Although the ensemble is inspired by the silhouettes of the homes of Los Angeles (United States), it must however deal with the climate of the United Kingdom, more humid. The structure is made from two blocks forming a "T" to reduce the risk of flooding while the steep roof reduces water runoff during rainy days.

While the look of Heather Cottage is striking in the Berkshire landscape, its covering evokes the vernacular architecture of the region. Its facades, clad in Kebony vertical wood cladding, also withstand the elements and allow the house to blend in with a green and wooded environment.

The elevated residence is accessed by a series of steps leading to a bevelled terrace and the various rooms, organized on one level. The living room, the dining room and the kitchen are combined in a single south-facing space with sliding glass doors, bathing the living space with natural light. The east wing of the book is dedicated to night spaces.

A dwelling so british !
