Lacaton & Vassal, Frédéric Druot et Christophe Hutin : Lauréats du prix Mies van der Rohe

Cocorico! Awarded the 7 last May, the prize Mies van der Rohe returns this year to the association of the three French firms Lacaton & Vassal, Frédéric Druot and Christophe Hutin for their transformation of 530 housing the Grand Parc in Bordeaux (33). An unexpected collaboration that has distinguished itself among 383 other smooth projects. The opportunity for us to look at the first prize of this prestigious award.

Every two years since 1988, the world of architecture is anxiously awaiting the winner of the Mies Van Der Rohe Award, each of them going for their little prognosis. And this year, surprise! It is indeed an association of French architects who joins Dominique Perrault - until then only representative of the Hexagon since 1996 - to the pantheon of the laureates. This victory is all the stronger as it appears on the occasion of the anniversary of the Bauhaus, a major creative school whose German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was the last director, from 1930 to 1933.

The rewarded project is the rehabilitation of three post-war buildings in the Bordeaux city of Grand Parc. With the comfort of the inhabitants as a common thread, the architects exclude the idea of destroying the large complexes - thus avoiding having to relocate the residents - and favor an intervention on the facade, by annexing winter gardens offering exceptional views of the Gironde capital. A design that seduced the jurors who wished to salute "The optimization of spaces and the contribution of a new quality of life" to tenants.

"At a time when the social housing commissions are demanding a reduction in the size of the apartments, the volumes are increased here, bringing dignity and greater value to the individual and the collective. " Jury of the Mies van der Rohe Prize

Awarded at the Pavillon Mies van der Rohe in Barcelona (Spain) for a check of 60 000 euros and a sculpture of the pavilion, the trio was not alone to represent the tricolor within the discipline. Indeed, the "Emerging Architecture" prize was awarded to the Toulouse firm Bast for the realization of a school restaurant in Montbrun-Bocage (31).

After the success of the World Cup, nothing stops the French!
