Taillandier Architectes Associés et Scalène Architectes : Parking Victor Hugo

Close to the Capitol Square in Toulouse (31), a new building all dressed in white with curves evoking the Rotondes and other ancient arena seems to come from another time. Between Punic wars and science fiction, this "parking market" signed Taillandier Architects Associates and Scalene Architects combines the need of important neighborhood residents and strong architectural gesture. Ride youth!

Located on the old wood market - renamed Place Victor Hugo in 1886 -, the "Parking Market", designed by the local architect Pierre Laffitte and the Genard agency in 1959, was until then the symbol of the modernism of the Rose City, having even been captured by the French photographer Dieuzade in a black and white graphic composition.

Iconic certainly, but become obsolete, the Parking Victor Hugo is the subject of a great rehabilitation by the local agency Taillandier Architects Associates and Scalene Architects. The set of 10 000 white prefabricated concrete square meters consists of three parts: a double propeller ramp system, a 419 parking lot and a ground floor market. An amazing juxtaposition that implies a large attendance. That's why, the urban planner Joan Busquets has reworked the neighborhoods, proposing a homogeneity of the grounds at the scale of the city and offering a place of choice to the pedestrians. A space with important flow certainly, but especially to the unique dynamism!

The first point of intervention of the architects concerns the vertical corridors of the pedestrians denatured by many additions over the years, thus making them too narrow and inconvenient. Under the leadership of Taillandier and Scalène, the traffic is cleared and adjusted to PMR standards. Characterized by its vertical zigzag breezes, Laffite's project transforms 60 years later while retaining its modern soul and adopts guardrails with the same motif, but this time horizontally.

A building that goes through the ages (almost) without having a ride!
