Tectoniques Architectes : The People Hostel aux Deux-Alpes

Nestled in the resort of Les Deux Alpes in Isère (38), the People Hostel is the first hotel built in solid wood panels CLT (Cross Laminated Timber), a specialty straight from Austria. This establishment for a young clientele combines the accessibility of the hostel with the comfort of the hotel and the guest house, redefining the accommodation in the mountains. Funded by La Foncière Hoteliere des Alpes (CDC Group) and operated by France Hostels, the hotel was designed by Tectoniques Architectes and built by Adim - Vinci Construction France.

The People Hostel is designed as an extension of an already existing building, the former UCPA center dating from 1962. The goal of the rehabilitation and modernization of the building is to transform this emblematic place of the 1960-70 years by an architectural writing adapted to the needs of our time.

The residence is a "One Stop Hostel", a friendly and dynamic hotel, offering affordable accommodation. The property includes various common and private areas. It counts 362 beds, divided between 43 dormitories of four to eight beds and 45 double rooms. It also has common places, from the storage of equipment to relaxation areas and catering. The dormitories and shared spaces are installed in the old building, while the large rooms are integrated in the new expansion.

The renovation and elevation of the original building, as well as the construction of the extension, were designed to integrate both the architecture and the mountain environment. The composition of weather-adapted roofs, for example, refers to the traditional entangled roofs of villages in the region. In addition, the abstract decorative patterns of the wood and the plural materiality of the facades - wood, stone, metal - all add to a certain heritage of French Alpine architecture while creating a contemporary complex.

The specificity of the building comes mainly from woodworking. Two treatments of the material create the originality of the whole. The squares of the facade, subject to bad weather, are worked with a saturator of gray which gives it its solid hue, while the woods of the interior are coated with a blond stain. The solid wood panels of the structure, used in particular for the walls and the floors, allowed the realization of this project of magnitude. Inside, they remain visible in several spaces. This bias radically contrasts with the hotel architecture of the area that conceals the networks and building materials by archetypal cladding of the mountain atmosphere. The approach of this architectural operation is therefore relatively unprecedented for the French Alps.

One-of-a-kind hotel residence, the People Hostel is a subtle blend of tradition and contemporaneity.
