Opus 5 architectes : Ecole de musique d’Elancourt

Opus 5 architects signs the conversion of the former ecumenical center of Elancourt (78) into a new music school for the municipality. Serenity, art and transmission ... these are the notions on which the architects of the Parisian agency have relied to give life to this project.

The renovation of the religious complex of the Seven Mares district of the new city of Saint-Quentin en Yvelines is part of a desire to preserve the simplicity and spirit of the original building built by Philippe Deslandes between 1974 and 1976. Rehabilitation consists in the preservation of the main architectural features of the building while modernizing it. So, bet?

The reconversion of the center includes first covering the facades, now dressed in bricks, molded by hand and arranged with live joints in continuity. The walls are openwork at the level of moucharabieh windows, ancestral technique of Islamic architecture, to ensure the homogeneity of the external structure. This new envelope with beige shades then contrasts with the austerity of that of the 70 years. The deep blue artificial turf roof is the original touch of the project, making the site particularly visible from the surrounding heights and the sky.

Inside, the modernization of the volumes is thought according to the new function of the site. The light wood trim of the rooms, for example, ensures their acoustic quality. Natural lighting is also conducive to the learning and practice of the fourth art. The different openings, screened walls and skylights, bathes the classrooms and corridors with a soft light.

By giving a second wind to the original religious building, Opus 5 architects has made the center not only a very contemporary music school, but also a place of knowledge, sharing and life, which fascinates with the tranquility that emanates from it.

A perfectly successful reconversion!
