Taillandier Architectes Associés : Villa T

Rehabilitate a typically Toulouse historic accommodation into a contemporary home? This bet was taken up by the teams of Taillandier Architectes Associés who signed an astonishing renovation project in the Montplaisir district of the Ville rose (31), where classic facades, concrete and wood coexist in harmony.

Located in an area for the protection of historic monuments, Villa T is the result of a renovation of housing typical of the Toulouse region: cornice, rosettes, roof with two slopes parallel to the street and brick facade make up indeed the decor of the original house. It is therefore difficult to project yourself into contemporary accommodation! And yet, the architects, who have chosen to keep this facade on an extremely busy street, have succeeded in the tour de force of transforming this hitherto dilapidated town house into a residence anchored in the XNUMXst century.

On the facade side, two identities communicate. When the one on the street is partly preserved and cleaned of the parasitic elements of time, the treatment granted to the one overlooking the garden is resolutely more contemporary, where the concrete produced is pierced with large bay windows allowing natural light to enter the living spaces .

The house is designed as the union of two superimposed duplexes: the “life duplex” and the “night duplex”. The day rooms in fact occupy two levels making the link with that of the street and that of the garden, while the night part is distributed on the two upper floors.
The living areas consist of a kitchen open to the double height overlooked by a large room bringing together the living room and the dining room, while the “night duplex” accommodates two children's bedrooms on the first level and a master suite at the last floor.
Here too, a real dialogue is established between the contemporaneity of concrete and the warmth of wood. “The contrast between the stained concrete and the light oak highlights the duality of the house, historic building / contemporary construction, intimate space / museum space, living and reception spaces / night and intimate spaces. " mean architects.

For this project, the project managers were inspired by great architectural classics. We thus find a library wrapping itself around the staircase - with the hopper hollowed out of 15 centimeters on the height of the four levels -, obvious wink to the knowledge of ancient Babylon as well as a ramp connecting the street to garden level echoing that of the Guggenheim in New York. The relationship between living space and museum scenography is also a feature of the creation. When the staircase railing becomes a picture rail for Raymond Espinasse's paintings, the examination of the materials refers to the world of white cube, in which the owners exhibit their designer furniture.

A project that hides its share of surprises.
