Ubalt Architectes : INSEP x ADIDAS

Since January 2020, the National Institute of Sport, Expertise and Performance (INSEP) has benefited from new infrastructures, both functional and graphic, designed by Ubalt Architects.

The Parisian architecture studio Ubalt Architectes has partnered with the event agency Ubi Bene to renovate several INSEP spaces as part of its partnership with the sports brand adidas. The Ubalt Architectes teams have thought of the spirit of the place around the colors common to INSEP and adidas, white and blue. From the choice of colors to the selection of materials, the architects have thus decided to draw their inspiration from the graphic universes of the two entities to better illustrate this co-branding. The whole challenge of rehabilitation therefore consisted in designing a functional place with a strong visual identity.

Designed to welcome top athletes, the new INSEP infrastructures consist of several spaces with simple geometric shapes: a living house, a meeting room, changing rooms and corridors. The house for young athletes is an open space structured according to the different activities of the athletes. In the center of the room is installed a large deployed sheet metal cage, which includes high tables reserved for meals or working moments. On either side of the cell, there is a playroom and a solarium. With its blue floor, its deployed sheet metal and its immaculate tiling furniture, the meeting room named after the famous French athlete Micheline Ostermeyer responds to the decoration of the main room. In the altered corridors of the Halle Pajol, blue dominates, once again recalling the partnership between the French institute and the German firm. The architects have covered the walls, benches and showers of the locker rooms with white tiles, while the sandstone from the ground rises along the wall. Only a few discreet touches of blue contrast with the sober hues of the room.

All the new INSEP spaces are animated by a subtle game of associations of graphic lines, raw materials and bold colors, which creates the spirit of the place. The place wants to be functional, but becomes singular thanks to the great freedom taken by Ubalt Architects to reinterpret the sports complex in the image of the two structures.
