Kate Ballis : Infra Realism

Reinventing a landscape seen and reviewed? That was the mission of the Australian photographer Kate Ballis. She who knows the city of Palm Spring (USA) as her pocket had indeed tired of capturing the same horizons, day after day ... A boredom quickly transformed into a source of inspiration, and resulting from the series Infra Realism, all in pink.

If in 1960, Robert Doisneau photographed Palm Springs and the luxurious lifestyle of its inhabitants for the magazine FortuneKate Ballis offers a new vision of the California city. The sumptuous flat-roofed villas remain but their famous residents are disappearing and giving way to a ghost town where modernist architecture dominates. Located at a thousand places of clichés extolling the blue sky of this oasis, those of Kate Ballis energize these panoramas with sudden frenetic tints.

Bright red pools, pink skies, blue trees, purple buildings ... all the elements of the desert city adorn themselves with colorful and extravagant clothes. To do this, Photoshop point but a particular photographic process. Indeed, the artist has converted his usual Sony into a full-spectrum device that allows him to capture infrared rays and heat, all complemented by colored lenses.

"The colors I chose for the series allowed me to question reality and create ambiguity in everyday scenes. " Kate Ballis, photographer

Despite the unique palette used by Ballis, we still recognize iconic constructions like Richard Neutra's House Kaufmann or Frank Sinatra's residence designed by E. Stewart Williams. But, in the light of the effects of nuances and saturation, what usually appears as a desert and dreary commune, bursts and revives.

An innovative vision that proves that with a good idea, the soul of a place can change completely.
