Al Mefer : Alien Architecture

A neuroscientist and photographer, Al Mefer's profile is as atypical as his series. His latest, Alien Architecture, showcases the skyscrapers of Benidorm (Spain) and integrates them into post-apocalyptic settings, worthy of HGWells' science fiction novels.

Benidorm is the city of Spain with the highest towers in the world per capita, built to accommodate the masses of vacationers who invaded the country in the 1970 and 1980 years. From then on, the seaside resort has quickly become the experimental ground for architects whose surprisingly beautiful creations bear witness to this era of creative expansion.

A vertical environment that has inspired the artist from Alicante (Spain) who plunges, thanks to his shots as well as digital retouches, the Costa del Sol in a strange atmosphere, anticipating what the Earth would look like if the humanity was living its last moments. Thus, the infinite height and the round elements of the buildings are integrated with pink and warm backgrounds, evoking as well an aging sun as the repercussions of a nuclear bomb.

Mefer only captures the architecture. Not a man, not a silhouette, comes to populate his clichés, so that one easily imagines what the urban spaces would look like if the conditions of our world were not more favorable to receive us. Including 9 clichés, the whole echoes the ancient 9 planets of the solar system, themselves unable to accommodate any living organism.

A series with the smell of sulfur, which fortunately, exists only thanks to the magic of Photoshop.
