Jesse Rieser : The Changing Landscape of American Retail

The Changing Landscape of American Retail is a photographic roadtrip initiated in 2015 by Jesse Rieser. A series that is in line with the chronicles of peri-urban American life of the one who describes himself as a "Student of subtleties". Here, the artist tackles the subject of abandoned malls, abandoned in favor of a trade 2.0.

Immediately, the shots of Jesse Rieser seduce the viewer by their pastel beauty and their quasi-ascetic composition. We first believe in a quest for minimalism, then, to look closely we realize that these spaces, so typical of the American peripheries, are empty, abandoned. The buying fever that had seized citizens in the 1960 years is no longer, or rather that it is no longer there, it moved on an intangible territory, that of the web; it has, in its own way, shaped the profile of the country's urban outskirts of a low-end architectural silhouette built at the derisory price of 45 dollars per square meter - three times less than a new house.

A change in behavior that upsets the landscape of cities but also an associated microcosm. Indeed, many intrigues are knotted in these vast sheds, where families do not hesitate to come for a walk on weekends. How many teens have these first kisses? These temples of consumption have turned into impromptu theaters of social life and, as strangely as it may seem, have somehow overcome a certain lack of space and public services.

A "Apocalypse of commerce", which is reflected in Jesse Rieser's snapshots, as dramatic as they are graphic, with lines of composition distilled drop-wise.
