Événement : Desert Design

The new exhibition of the Yves Saint Laurent Museum in Marrakech (Morocco) looks at the long tradition of weaving Berber women of the Aït Khebbach tribe. Full of vivid colors, the carpets presented to the spectator reflect the expression and the abundant creativity of the desert regions of North Africa.

A key moment in the daily life of Berber women, associating manual activity and socialization, weaving is now coming out of its usual context and populating the walls of the Yves Saint Laurent museum in Marrakech on the occasion of the "Desert Design" exhibition. Characterized by tribal patterns and vibrant tones, the textile creations are made from recycled fabric tips from the souks or old clothes that are then assembled onto the weft to become garments. boucharouites, traditional area rugs - which can also be used as cover.

The course highlights the history, geography and creation of these textiles but also focuses on women weavers, unaccustomed to being on the front of the stage. The auditorium is transformed into an immersive space and brings together portraits of different formats as well as a short film honoring these artists from the shadows. "Desert Design reveals the rare talent of these women weavers, while inviting a spatio-temporal escape in a landscape with a thousand riches", specifies the statement of the exhibition.

The scenography, signed by the Moroccan designer Younes Duret, affirms the desire of the newly erected art center to promote the different regions of the country while talking with the adjacent Majorelle Garden whose bright colors seduce thousands of tourists since 2011.

The promise of a colorful trip.
