Événement : Carte blanche Mathias Kiss

Unclassifiable contemporary artist, Mathias Kiss defends a protean work that oscillates between art and craft. While his poetic creation Need air plays with our perception at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille (59), the artist transforms wood into gold in Paris. Visit of his immersive installation at the Chapelle des Gobelins.

After fifteen years of learning the decorative arts among the Companions, Mathias Kiss emancipates from his corporation to create his own creative vocabulary. Then begins his artistic career during which he frees himself from the shackles of academism and lowers the boundaries between art and crafts.

As part of the "Create for Louis XIV" exhibition, the Mobilier National invites Mathias Kiss to the Gobelins Chapel (13ème arrondissement). Under the curation of Marc Bayard, the artist diverts emblematic gold from the reign of the Sun King and covers the entire sanctuary floor with gold leaf. An in situ installation that deconstructs a whole heritage of decorative arts. Ornamentations thus lose their decorative function to become spatial abstractions that hinder our perception. The aesthetic experience is striking.

Mathias Kiss begins here a dialogue between contemporary art and architectural heritage by the diversion of the codes of classical ornamentation.
