Cubitts : Redux

The British optician combines style and ethics in a range of glasses entirely made from recycled waste. Pots of yogurts, potatoes or old CDs, so many amazing materials that is yet the collection of 10 original frames and trends. Like what, it's in old pots that we make ... the best glasses!

If the brand based in London (UK) usually manufactures its frames cellulose acetate - a semi-synthetic plastic derived from the wood pulp associated with cotton - it takes today an ecological turning by proposing eccentric models and authentic made from recycled elements. A real step forward for manufacturers who think about the technicality of these new materials like no other: "Any material used in the manufacture of glasses must be very versatile, with a wide range of properties"says Cubitts founder Tom Broughton.

Thanks to numerous associations with various specialized companies, Cubitts succeeds in recreating properties similar to those of cellulose acetate. The Chips Board - producing materials from McCain-provided waste - contributed to the creation of a frame with a texture close to wood, made possible by the addition of ground coffee, pine meal and oak chips. Human hair (generously donated by company staff and their friends) was used in the development of a dark-toned pair when the Welsh firm Smile Plastics creates multiple frames out of milk bottles, yogurt or food packaging.
CDs, mushrooms, corn or cutting boards complete this list as singular as the models offered by Cubitts.
