Franz West : Mobilier

Star of the 2018 exhibitions of the year - including, among other things, two retrospectives at the Tate Museum and the Center Pompidou -, behind the Austrian artist Franz West is also hiding an outstanding designer, this time honored on the website of David Zwirner gallery in a virtual exhibition. The opportunity for us to return to its iconic furniture as sculptural as its plastic works.

Far from being confined to one domain, Franz West (1947 - 2012) always considered his art to be complete, even designing, in the 1970s, furniture intended for the audience attending his performances. What was a minor addition to his practice will eventually become a part of Franz West's art, which he describes as "Adaptations for the human body at rest".

His first real chairs, welded together from scrap metal, came to life in the late 1980s thanks to his collaboration with Mathis Esterhazy. Its furniture will then travel, from the MoMA PS1 to the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna via the Venice Biennale of 1990. If, in their infancy, the West chairs were as aesthetic as they were uncomfortable, the development of foam lining coverings would allow the furniture visual artist to become real pieces of design.

Today, its chairs, sofas and tables populate the collection of art dealer David Zwirner which offers a virtual exhibition until December 22 as well as an online sale of these pieces of furniture.

A gift idea (not very accessible) as the holidays approach? After all, when you love, you don't count!
