TMPL : Un design minimaliste

In the tradition of the American artist and theorist Donald Judd, the British design studio TMPL designs pieces of furniture with a formal style. Geometric and monochrome volumes that recall the aesthetic precepts of American minimalism.

Founded by designer Dale Stephens, TMPL is a London-based design studio that develops a formal vocabulary fueled by an in-depth study of industrial objects and modes of production. Shortly after its creation in 2018, TMPL stood out for its minimalist furniture made with raw materials: CLMN, CH4, BNCH and TWR.

CLMN
The CLMN steel coffee table is inspired by the load-bearing structures of architecture and explores industrial manufacturing techniques. The openwork surface in black powder-coated sheet steel confronts the weight of the material with the visual lightness of the object.

CH4
With its geometric shape and simple lines, the C4 steel chair is made up of assembled rectangular steel sheets. Without ornaments or flourishes, the seat is reminiscent of the “specific objects” of the leader of minimalist art Donald Judd, in particular the chairs Half Divided Chair (1984) et Side Recessed Plywood Chair (1991).

BNCH
Made of steel coated with red paint or galvanized steel, BNCH is a minimalist bench as uncluttered as it is uncomfortable, intended to decorate an exterior or interior. Its sculptural form alternating empty and full seems to be more of art than design.

TWR
TWR is a yellow pine wood shelf made up of ten hollowed-out rectangular modules. Designed to accommodate books and art magazines, the furniture is functional and modular, which can be used as storage as a room divider.

Clean and simple furniture with a minimalist inspiration assumed.
