Banksy : Hotel Walled Off

After the amusement park in Bristol dismaland, the British street-artist Banksy continues to parody popular culture in artistic and political purposes. His new project, The Walled Off Hotel (literally "the hotel cut through the wall"), referring to the luxury hotel chain, Waldorf Astoria Hotel, takes place in Bethlehem in the West Bank, just steps from the security fence on which the artist had already intervened.

The Walled Off is a reinvestment of an existing guest house located near the famous wall separating Israelis and Palestinians. The hotel is what is more traditional but is also a separate work of art. Of the nine bedrooms, seven are decorated and arranged by the graffiti artist while the other two were in the care of the Palestinian artist Sami Musa and his Canadian colleague Dominique Petrin. Several types of housing are available: Artists, Full of original works of art; economic Budgets equipped barracks of the Israeli army surplus; the ScenicOffering breathtaking views of the wall; and after "presidential" for up to six people and decorated in a kitsch style.


The residence also includes common areas such as a colonial-style piano bar referring to Britain, which in 1917, took hold of Jerusalem. They serve besides English food like scones or tea. In this shift in space with place Banksy installs works voluntarily protester covered: surveillance cameras then replace hunting trophies, graffiti cover the windows, classical paintings become vandalism scenes, pastoral representations are scanned by bulldozers and Renaissance articles are wrapped in toxic clouds. The hotel also has a museum dedicated to the history of the wall of a gallery with changing exhibitions of emerging artists, a permanent exhibition consists of twenty Palestinian contemporary achievements, and a screening room.

Banksy, who has always been very inspired by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict had already decorated the walls of his Gaza murals. Here he delivers a unique place, both gold mine for art lovers and sensitizing the struggles of this region, with all proceeds are donated to local organizations and projects.
