Nicole Cota Studio : Hôtel Drifter

In the residential Mid-City neighborhood of New Orleans (United States), the American agency Nicole Cota Studio realizes the development of an old motel built in the 1950 years: the Hotel Drifter. The project is eclectic in style, mixing wood, raw concrete and colorful tiles in an atmosphere full of vitality, a nod to the sixties.

The motel, representative of this type of establishment built from the 1920 years in the southern United States to accommodate bikers and other travelers during their journey, includes two buildings arranged in an L around a pool. The first, a reception pavilion with an area of 120 square meters, located along the Tulane Avenue, major axis of the city, is largely open to the street through a bay window full height topped with a prominent cornice. The second, a parallelepiped of 27 meters by 10, hosts for its part on two levels twenty rooms - from single to triple -, connected by corridors, like any self-respecting motel.

The renovation of this abandoned place at the beginning of the 2000 years, requires the collaboration of two teams. An agency from New Orleans, Concordia Architecture, which has restored all of the pink brick and white concrete facades and exterior surfaces. The American design studio Nicole Cota Studio has taken care of the interior design, mainly secondary work.

In the reception hall, the bias is eclectic. On the floor, the textures mingle, between fragments of tiles with marked graphics - specially imported from Oaxaca, a city in southern Mexico - and a coarse smooth concrete with pinkish nuances. The furniture is equally original: in wood, glass or leather, the chairs and tables all have a history of their own, sourced by designers throughout the country or designed by local designers or locals. The sleeping areas of 20 square meters are more sober than the common areas, with a unified floor covering, dressed in a single type of faience, and beds simply embellished with a headboard and a paneled tablet of varnished wood.

Between palm trees, deckchairs and disco ball, the slogans here are relaxation and pleasure. A sparkling atmosphere that makes us want to go back in time.
