MINI et Studiomama : Mini Living - Built by All

At Milan's Salone del Mobile (Italy), the MINI car brand and the London-based architecture firm Studiomama jointly present Mini Living - Built by All, proposing to transform abandoned spaces into community living spaces that include housing. and workplaces, through modules designed by architects and future residents themselves.

Never two without three ! After do Disturb in 2016, a single-storey apartment blurring the boundaries between private and public spheres, and BreatheA three-level circular structure wrapped in translucent fabric presented in 2017, the MINI car company once again occupies the Milan Furniture Fair, in abandoned industrial premises located near Via Tortona. In collaboration with the two designers of Studiomama, the company offers this year modules with metal contours, ranging from 15 to 20 square meters, equipped to allow both to live and work there. For this, four individual pieces (for a botanical illustrator, a designer, a musician and collector) have been mounted in this former Milan manufacturing location, between which there are common areas such as a kitchen, a gym, an amphitheater and a garden, whose functions are identifiable by their hue. A colorful idea!

The principle: each development is the result of a collaboration between architects and future hosts, through a model in which they have miniature furniture elements, versatile and easily combinable between them, before the whole is erected in full size. At the heart of the construction process, the tenant, can co-design a place of life that corresponds to it. These four very different examples demonstrate a great flexibility of the model.

Each apartment is in this way the image of its imaginary resident: a botanical illustrator would live in the canary yellow unit where a greenhouse and images of plants would inspire him for his work, while the pink block could be a studio of fashion designer, with a workstation and plenty of storage space. The blue room has a soundproof room, ideal for recordings and therefore a musician; and finally the green monolith, equipped with glazed displays, is thought for a pottery collector.

Who would have thought that building your apartment could be child's play?
